If you live in Houston, Texas an EZ Tag on your windshield has become a necessary evil. While the new HCTRA tag is less of an obstruction then the old plastic box design the recommended install location remains an eye sore on the Corvette.
The HCTRA recommends you install the EZ Tag four inches below the top of your windshield and two inches to the right of the rear view mirror. This location puts the EZ Tag right in the middle of the windshield. One word…Ugly!
Many people have come up with innovative ways to address this problem. Some alternatives use Plexiglas, others have tried to mount the EZ-Tag under the hood. While both of these approaches are possible alternatives to explore, I decided to find a location as close to invisible as possible, required nothing but the EZ-tag, and was just as reliable as the HCTRA recommended location.
After some testing, my preferred location is to put the EZ Tag about ½ inch from the top and ½ inch from the outside of passenger side of the windshield. This puts the EZ Tag behind the windshield tint and not only keeps it far enough away from the windshield antenna, but makes it virtually invisible under normal lighting.
Did you test it?
Yes. Our testing included one fixed antenna C5, and one C5 with a windshield antenna driving through every possible major and minor toll booth along both the Sam Houston and the Westpark Toll Ways. After 9 months of testing still no false reads or letters in the mail.
Mounting Instructions:
Tools Required
- Hyde Red Handle Scraper – Found in the paint department at Lowes
- Window Cleaner
- Clean Rag
Step 1
Remove the old EZ Tag
Using your left hand hold the old EZ Tag while you place the blade of the Hyde scraper between the glass and the bottom of the EZ Tag. Gently pull down on the EZ Tag while you push the blade up to the double-sided tape.
Once you have the blade centered across both pieces of double sided tape, push firmly against the tape with the scraper while you gently pull the EZ Tag away from the windshield.
The double sided tape is very strong so you must take your time during this step to ensure the EZ Tag is removed without damage. The edge of the scraper bends away from the glass, so just take your time and remember to use even pressure pushing up with the scraper while your other hand is pulling the EZ Tag away from the windshield.
Step 2
Surface Preparation
Liberally clean the area of installation with window cleaner. Finish cleaning the area with the alcohol pad supplied with the EZ Tag kit.
Step 3
Install the new EZ Tag.
Windshield Antenna:
The EZ Tag will be installed in the area 1/2 inches from the top of the windshield and 1/2 inches from the side. If your Corvette has the radio antenna in the windshield this will give you approximately 6 inches distance from the EZ Tag. Once you identify the correct location affix the new EZ Tag to the windshield pressing from the top to the bottom while avoiding the radio tag in the center of the tag.
Fixed Antenna:
The EZ Tag can be installed in the area 2.5 inches from the top of the windshield and 4 inches from the side. Since there is no antenna to avoid, anywhere in the blue tint area on the passenger side windshield will achieve the desired result. Once you identify the location affix the new EZ Tag to the windshield pressing from the top to the bottom while avoiding the radio tag in the center of the tag.
The results can be seen on the White C5 on the Right. You cannot see the EZ Tag on the windshield on the passenger side of the car.

Do you have any advice for a C6?
I have this same problem on my Miata, except Miatas don’t have a tint at the top so there is NOWHERE to put it, except maybe on the nonmetal part of the hard top.
